Start by stopping use of the product you think may have caused the buildup.

Sweep or vacuum the floor first to remove loose dirt and debris. Then use a pH-neutral cleaner made for your specific floor type, mixed exactly according to the label. More cleaner doesn’t mean cleaner floors—it can leave even more residue behind.

Apply the cleaner with a well-wrung microfiber mop that is damp, not wet. Work in small sections, and don’t allow water or cleaning solution to sit on the floor.

Before cleaning the entire area, test a small hidden spot and let it dry completely. Make sure the floor looks better and that there are no changes in color, shine, or finish before continuing.

What to Skip

Avoid strong vinegar mixtures, dish soap, wax, polish, steam mops, and generic wax removers unless the flooring manufacturer specifically says they’re safe.

These products can leave residue or affect certain finishes. Adding stronger chemicals without knowing what’s already on the floor can make the problem worse instead of better.
